The day started out cold and cloudy and fishin was slow which Forest is famous for. We dragged some leaches( being a leach fisherman its what I do) around and did some drift casting managed only one long line release and one smaller 2 lber. Sinking lines with every color combination and size from 8 to 2x long shank magnum leaches were tried. The 2x long mangnum leached in green and brown, greean and black was the best. A very simple leach pattern I have came up with(and the help of an old timer fisherman friend of mine) over the last few years of fishing the Cariboo fall time when the fish put on the feed bag and eat big flies.
Recipe for this flie is very easy: Mustad 2x heavy long shank hook, (weight can be added to the hook to make it sink faster of just to the front to get more movement from the fly at this time), thread base, Tie in a tail of strung maribou no longer than the shank of the hook of multiple colors of brown green or what ever color you want(I add some red or maroon to give it the blood look), dub in the body: a of a mix of similar colors as the tail 3/4 to 2/3 of the way up the shank of the hook, then tie in a clump of the same color combination maribou at the front of the hook on top no longer than the shank of the hook, finish of fly with a thin thread head, whipfinsh and glue. This fly can be tied in any color or size, I have had 20 fish afternoons casting this fly in the spring tied on a size 8 very thin sparse body to the rainbows of Bouchie lake.
The Afternoon finally started to warm up a bit and the sun came out. Then wham the fly rod just about came right out my hand with what felt like a train on the end of it. After a great fight a 7.7 lb rainbow came the net for a few pics and back in to the lake for someone else to fight another day. The lake is known for its chronomidie hatches in the spring and its huge crowds in the spring and summer, but when they all go home in fall and the water chills to the point where it only the die hards left its a great place to go and have a whole lake full of 5-12 lb fish all to yourself and a few buddies.
