Fishing Echoes Lake – Eastern Kootenay Rockies

Written by: Greg

Echoes Lake is a lake located just 4.6 miles from Skookumchuck and approx 45 minutes from Cranbrook on hwy 95 N. The lake is a smaller lake that is 17 acres in surface size with the max depth of approx 25 feet. A stellar jem nestled in the foot hills of the Steeple Mountains in the Eastern Kootenay Rockies.

A few friends and I decided to make a weekend of camping and fishing.  They told me this is a trophy lake with some beauties swimming in it!! I was ready!!

Once we got there ….they weren’t lying, from the top of the hill we could see the fish swimming across the way. We headed off in our canoes for a ride and I brought some silver spinners and spoons; we left the fly rods at home on this trip. We found a small school of 5; they darted for the silver but then switched directions once they got about a foot from it. I couldn’t believe it! I tried everything from changing my speed of retrieval to every lure colour in the tackle box! I was getting anxious to hook into one.  Just to top it all off they started appearing all over the place, the water was crystal clear almost aqua color. No Luck day 1!

Second day the same thing, they were teasing us all morning.  We met another boat on the lake that was using dry flies, BAMMM they pulled out a 23-inch monster! This thing must have jumped 4 times putting on a show before they reeled her in.  Finally we got to see one of these giants. Even though I didn’t catch one, we had a blast and we know the secret for next time…. Bring the ‘Fly Rods & Dry Flies’!!  I’ll be going back! If you are in the Cranbrook area; I recommend to give Echoes Lake a try, it offers a great camping area, easy cartop boat launch and some lunkers swimming in the depths! Most importantly don’t forget the dry flies!

Tight Lines & Conserve our Waters!
