One of the best ice fishing lakes near the Princeton area is nestled just outside of town limits. Martin Lake is small lake and is overlooked by many anglers. The lake is approx 4kms down the Princeton-Summerland Road, just after the Princeton fair grounds, turn left onto Nelson Rd.
This lake is surrounded by weeds and cat tail plants near the shorelines so it is difficult to fish in the open water season without a small boat or belly boat. Ice fishing offers great access to the entire lake. The lake freezes over in mid December and usually has good ice on it until second week of March. There is usually over 6 inches of ice on this lake by end of December.
The best spot to target on this lake during ice over is at the southend at the narrow part of the lake. Here you will find a ledge that drops off from 10 feet to 25 feet, fish this ledge. Early in the day fish the south shallow part of the lake in about 10 feet of water. The bottom of the lake is weedy and the larger trout tend to spend most of their time near bottom. Martin Lake also has freshwater shrimp in it that provides plenty of nourishment for the fish, hence why it is not unusual to pull out trout over 7 pounds! We found that the best bait to use when ice fishing this lake is corn and shrimp. Good luck!
