Looking to target Rainbow Trout in the lakes but you don’t have a boat? No problem! Early spring is a great time for shore anglers to get out fishing! In the early spring the trout are cruising shallow shoals in less than 10 feet of water foraging in on the active invertebrates which will soon emerge. Fly anglers can use patterns such as chironomids pupa, shrimp, scuds and micro leeches. Gear anglers can use a variety of small spinners such as Mepps and Martin Spinners or even small spoons such as Delta-Gibbs Crocs. If bait fishing, use a slip float system with bait such as pink maggots or dew worms suspended between 1 to 2 feet off bottom. A bottom setup with bait will work well too if the lake floor isn’t too weedy that you won’t get snagged. So bundle up; put on the waders if you have them and go early spring shore fishing to shake off those winter blues!
